The Sparx Systems award was established for a student that displays academic excellence in their degree.  On recieving the award, Tom commented "Learning at Federation University was one of the best experiences of my life. All of the lecturers were very kind and cared immensely about ensuring that their students were able to achieve their maximum potential and some of the friendships I made there will last the rest of my life. Over the course of my undergraduate, I studied a wide array of subjects including Artificial Intelligence, Security, Programming/Software Engineering, Databases, Networks, etc and got to be the project manager for a full year project that involved designing a Smart Bin system for Federation University campuses. My favourite area of ICT is programming/software engineering as it gives me an huge amount of creativity and allows me to continually challenge myself to design better systems and solutions to problems."

Sparx Systems likes to encourage Federation University students to achieve world class results. Sparx Systems has a strong association with Federation University with many staff having once worked and studied at Federation University.

Distributed Online Business Continuity

Distributed Online Business Continuity using the Pro Cloud Server

PCS-Corona-Wpaper-Banner-PCS.png

In recent times there has been an unprecedented obligation for staff to work at home, prompting a need for technical solutions that can ensure business continuity with a distributed and remote workforce.

The Sparx Systems software suite, including Enterprise Architect, Pro Cloud Server, WebEA and Prolaborate, offers a way for isolated workers to access their organization's centralized repositories using home-based Internet connections and to continue working as though they were still in the office. Using the Pro Cloud Server features they can continue contributing their expertise to strategic, business and technical projects and collaborating and sharing ideas in real-time.

To learn more about distributed online business continuity, please download the attached whitepaer.

The whitepaper discusses all of the benefits of using Enterprise Architect via the Pro Cloud Server, for distributed development and working from home.

To see the Pro Cloud Server in action, please view the following video on Distributed Online Business Continuity.

Oliver Kipf professionally combines his expertise in healthcare and Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) and relies entirely on Enterprise Architect.
He is currently working intensively on a reference architecture for healthcare that puts the patient in the center and also includes a pandemic scenario.

The global collaboration and preventative action currently being demonstrated by world authorities, national governments, multinationals, small businesses, communities, families and individuals to mitigate the rampant spread of COVID -19 through the global population, sets an example of large scale co-operation. In time the spread of the virus will be controlled, as appears to be the status of the outbreak in China, and society will be the wiser for the experience, the learnings of which will be codified in new health, and emergency response standards to support best practice.

Action on Human Health

According to Bruce Aylward, the World Health Organisation team leader, “rapid detection and contact tracing can help mitigate and break emerging infection chains where clusters emerge.”

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which are based on Geospatial standards, provide capabilities to organize, present, and analyze spatial and geographic data to indicate the location and number of infections, as is demonstrated by a number of universities including the University of Washington. https://hgis.uw.edu/virus/

Action on Climate Change

The World Meteorological Organization and an extensive network of partners has produced and published the “WMO Statement on the State of the Global Climate in 2019”. In the report Forward UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, stated, “This report outlines the latest science and illustrates the urgency for far-reaching climate action.”

Value of Standards

On a global scale, our ability and capacity for collective, rapid, action and response is evident. Can we apply this collective experience -the wisdom of hindsight- to prevent further harm to our ailing planet? I believe that we can!

Crisis presents not only a threat. It is also an extraordinary chance to improve our knowledge and response systems and to collectively learn and be more prepared for future emergencies.

Already, existing standards are being updated and new ones are being published. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has a number of widely used standards, including ISO 14001 that support methods to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The Sendai Framework   emphasizes the need for resilient health systems and the integration of disaster risk management into health care provision at all levels.

Both emergency scenarios, – the threat to global health and the threat to global climate - call for urgent responses to which we can all contribute.

Sparx Systems Support

For almost two decades, Sparx Systems has made Enterprise Architect available to the global standards development effort. The platform is used in multiple domains – Health, Utilities, Geospatial, Aviation, Transport, Meteorology, Land, Water etc, - to capture and codify industry best practice and enable developed standards from different domains to interoperate and facilitate cross domain knowledge sharing.

Standards development is a collaborative volunteer based activity and increased support for this effort across many domains including those mentioned above, requires more people to get involved.

If you are involved in the development of standards or you feel that you can contribute, please get in touch with us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Furthermore, if you are a Corporate or Government user of Enterprise Architect, please consider free deployment of the Pro Cloud Server to overcome the potential risk of lost productivity from employee self-isolation. Governance, Risk Management and Compliance

Governance, Risk Management and Compliance

Good governance helps guide good decision making for public organizations and companies. This helps to provide transparent decision making, that adheres to relevant government legislation, providing a safe and fair environment for the end-users of the designed systems.

There are numerous advantages of using Enterprise Architect to model the strategy within a repository and link that strategic direction and executive thinking to the processes, architectures, software and capabilities that are being directed and then modeled. This is a highly effective and powerful means of ensuring that strategic direction is followed and tied to the fundamental infrastructure and direction of an enterprise.

This white paper provides an insight into using Enterprise Architect for implementing governance directives, risk management and ensuring there is compliance to these directives and any external standards.

2019 Sparx Systems Award at Federation University

feduni2.jpg

Federation University, School of Science, Engineering and Information Technology holds an annual student awards ceremony, in which industry partners play a crucial role in supporting and encouraging our students to achieve greatness in their desired field.

Scott Hebbard, Sparx Systems Communications Manager recently had the pleasure of presenting the Sparx Systems award at a Federation University Student awards ceremony. The Sparx Systems Award in 2019 was presented to Drew McMahon.

Drew regularly used Enterprise Architect throughout his degree and he indicated “As a programmer and designer, I find the tool comprehensive and invaluable, and I'm thrilled to have continued access with my own licence. I'm grateful that Sparx Systems would support Federation University and the School of Science, Engineering, and Information Technology.”

Sparx Systems would like to congratulate Drew on his hard work and dedication to his studies.

Information about the Award recipient:

 drew-mcmahon.jpg

Drew has achieved excellent results throughout his degree and his dedication, perseverance and commitment to excellence were an inspiration to us all.

He has the top grade point average of 7 and an average final result of 94.24% across all his courses. He is easy to work with and shows maturity in his organisational skills and attention to understanding the latest technology.

Drew has embraced opportunities to extend his knowledge beyond his degree studies, for example attending an intensive bootcamp training course in Salesforce development during the lecture break in 2018.

This was undertaken during Drew’s final semester of study when he was very busy with finalising his internship with IBM and completing his final year project.

Drew is a very worthy recipient of this award and an exemplar of an upcoming IT professional.
