Sparx Systems specializes in high performance and scalable visual modeling tools for the planning, design and construction of software intensive systems. A Contributing Member of the Object Management Group (OMG), Sparx Systems is committed to realizing the potential of model-driven development based on open standards. The company’s flagship product, Enterprise Architect, has received numerous accolades since its commercial release in August, 2000. Enterprise Architect is the design tool of choice for over 740,000 registered users worldwide.

MDG Technology for ArcGIS is designed to help users model geodatabases for Esri's ArcGIS platform in Enterprise Architect. The technology provides a UML profile for ArcGIS and supports export and import of ArcGIS geodatabase schemas.

The new ArcGIS technology built into Enterprise Architect 9, Build 908 includes:

  • A UML profile for ArcGIS
  • A new ArcGIS diagram type and toolbox support
  • A Model Pattern that helps you structure an ArcGIS Workspace model
  • Quick Linker support to help you build valid ArcGIS schemas
  • An exporter that generates ArcGIS 10.0 workspaces in XML, readable by ArcCatalog
  • An importer for reverse engineering existing geodatabases in UML form

A brief video demonstration of the MDG Technology for ArcGIS is available.

MDG Technology for ArcGIS Beta is immediately available in Enterprise Architect 9, Build 908.

Support for modeling ArcGIS databases in Enterprise Architect was developed in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), who defined mappings between UML 2 and ArcGIS concepts, and prototyped an automated import and export capability for ArcGIS geodatabase schemas represented in UML.

Sparx Systems welcomes your feedback and suggestions on the beta ArcGIS profile.

The inaugural CEN/TC 287 Annual Award for Academic Excellence within INSPIRE, was awarded on the 29th June at the 2011 INSPIRE Conference in Edinburgh.

Sparx Systems presented the award to the winner Antoine Gourlay, from Ecole Centrale de Nantes, and his mentor Dr. Erwan Bocher.

This Award is an annual recognition of excellence within the INSPIRE community and an award for academic contributions to the development and adoption of geospatial standards through the use of Enterprise Architect, itself an award winning modeling tool from Sparx Systems.

The project from Ecole Centrale de Nantes was chosen as it deals with the implementation of a web processing service in a concrete use case - using an existing SDI and GIS to facilitate a new GI specification (WPS) in a practical way.

It demonstrates originality and technical quality and applies the INSPIRE principles for an application on a local level, while implementing a new specification with clearly presented results.

Information about entering the 2012 awards will be published on the Community site later this year.

Sparx Systems Supports GEOSS

Enterprise Architect, the full life cycle, UML modeling tool from Sparx Systems, is made freely* available to the GEOSS community via the Component and Service Registry. Licences can be accessed here http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise-architect-sdo.php

This technology contribution supports the “data sharing” foundation of GEOSS, and enables shared, integrated vision, between the nine Societal Benefit Areas across geographic and domain boundaries. Accomplishing this vision using today's disparate systems requires establishing an internationally coordinated operational framework to facilitate interoperability and harmonization. Enterprise Architect supports synergies between systems, and standards in separate environments can be modelled in a single tool, for accurate sharing of standards information with minimal time delay.

The UML 2.3 powered, team-based modeling environment encompasses the full product development lifecycle, with high-performance visual tools for business modeling, systems engineering, enterprise architecture, requirements management, software design, code generation, testing and more.
